Hot Stones
Hot Stone therapy is an ancient healing practice that’s been used for thousands of years across China, Native America, Africa, Europe, Egypt and India for cleansing the body, relaxing the heart, soothing the mind and grounding the soul. The use of heated stones in massage was reborn with the introduction of LaStone Therapy, created by Mary Nelson, in 1993 when she used heated stones in a sauna to relieve an injury. Hot stone massage has blossomed since then.
Unlike other forms of massage, which focus on physical manipulation with the hands, hot stone massage uses hot, smooth stones to massage and manipulate or place pressure on specific parts of the body. The stones are made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock rich in iron and magnesium, perfect for retaining heat. The heat from the stones gently penetrates the skin and muscles, helping you to relax and de-stress. Sometimes, cold stones are used during a hot stone massage. The cold stones are marble as they retain their coolness for longer.
The stones in a hot stone massage are heated in water, using a professional massage stone heater which monitors and maintains a consistent temperature. By increasing the temperature of the skin/soft tissue, the blood flow increases, raising oxygen uptake which accelerates tissue healing, improves circulation and calms the nervous system. This enhanced circulation promotes better oxygen and nutrient delivery to tissues, aiding in muscle relaxation and reducing tension. The cold stones that are often used after hot stones help to calm and soothe the skin, which reduces inflammation.
